Jiaozi
Right now I feel as though I should be making a guest appearance at EmptyBottle. Last night I caught up with Bob Burns, an old friend I hadn’t seen in years who invited me to dinner so that I could have a look at his girlfriend’s paintings. I photographed paintings for a living for many years and, as a result, I’ve seen more good art (and vastly more bad art) than most people in Australia. Hu Ming’s paintings, partly based on her twenty year career in the Chinese Army, are astonishingly good—I’ll write more about them when I have some more pictures to show.
She also makes the most delicious jiaozi (boiled dumplings) I’ve ever eaten, which we washed down with Scharer’s Lager (easily the best beer in Australia—my friend Bob had a small keg in the refrigerator) and a bottle of Shaw & Smith Sauvignon Blanc I’d brought. From there it was on to The Basement to drink a few Heinekens and hear Reneé Geyer singing Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye songs. A wonderful night, and this morning I feel somewhat seedy.

Ah, the hangover. A good hangover (not a contradiction in terms, but then I'm a bit of a connoisseur) can be a revelation. *reminds self to write a Paean to the Hangover sometime*
I'd like to see more of those paintings, too...
Ditto on the paintings. As for the hangover, as long as it is caused by a quality beverage such as Scharers (or Cascade) then it has its own noble spirit that makes it a fitting end to a celebration and engenders a certain pride in the sufferer. Oh, and make sure you drink plenty of water as well.
Nights like that take me back to old Sydney Town -- haven't hear Renee sing in decades ;-( Great painting. Look forawrd to seeing more.
Did you ever find more images of Hu Ming's work? The only online resource I can see for her is the website for SOHO Galleries Sydney.
SOHO just did a minor showing of her work in Singapore. It is fantastic stuff! I'm knocked out to learn that Ming is a woman [as far as I know, "Ming" is a unisex name like "Pat", "Robin" or "Hiromi"] -- this adds a really interesting dimension to the work.
I'd certainly like to know more about her. And I'd love to see other works.
You seem to have an excellent "back channel"... any new information coming through?
Thanks for any information you can pass along!
This discussion is now closed. My thanks to everyone who contributed.
