A sublime collision of religion, politics, and art

George W. Bush rendered in a mosaic of Jesus imagesI thought the art of Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light®, defined the outer reaches of American kitsch until I saw Joey de Villa’s post about an item up for sale on eBay: “a poster of Dubya made up of a mosaic of classic paintings of Jesus!” I hightailed it over to eBay only to find that bidding had closed. The “Open Edition” Signed Fine Art Print, titled Our Christian President, fetched only US$25. The original cost of the print is a mystery because it’s not listed on the JesusMosaics site. Nor are there prices for the other fine art mosaic prints—potential buyers are directed to their local Catholic bookstore or gift shop.

Later. Good news! There’s another print available and I’ve entered a bid. This will make a perfect birthday gift for Joe Duemer or Mike Golby. Or, if both of them reject it on political and/or religious grounds, a terrific prize for my next competition.

I've always said that W. isn't an individual, just a collective of heads calling the shots behind the scenes. The Jesus Mosaicists know it too! We may differ on whose heads they are, though...

OK, Joe. I'll take that as meaning you have no political, religious, or aesthetic objections to "Our Christian President" -- it's a Dutch auction so I'm fairly sure of securing one of these valuable artworks. I'll keep you posted.

Hmm, Steve. Sounds like you should try your hand at mosaic art. I'd love to see the results!
