Honesty
It must have been twenty-five years ago that I read a magazine profile of George Segal in which the writer described an exchange between Segal and another guest, after both had appeared on a television chat show. As I recall, the conversation went something like this:
“You were amazing,” said the other guest. “Nothing like I’d expected. I knew you’d be smart and funny but I never imagined that you would open up and reveal the real George Segal, that you’d be so honest and vulnerable.”
“Well,” replied Segal, “that’s not really so difficult. After all, I’m an actor.”

Heheh... Yeah, We're all actors to an extent, choosing what "role" We play in our lives. Thaz my take from "Stavros'" recent blog.
This from Fernando Pessoa, the Portuguese poet of multiple personality: "Having definite and certain opinions, instincts, passions and a known and fixed character - all this adds up to the horror of turning our soul into a fact, of materialising it, making it external. Living is a secret and fluid state of being ignorant of things and of oneself --- and the only style of life appropriate and comforting to a wise person."
coincidentally i was sent an email from beliefnet this morning that said someting like, 'be yourself, that way no-one can tell you you're doing it wrong'.
doesn't explain the performance anxiety that sometimes stops you 'being yourself' though does it.
Photoshop in the Garden of Eden.
I had heard about this LA times photographer getting sacked for compositing a couple of pics together for one shot from Basra that ran on the newspaper cover during the war. His (to me) inexplicable shame http://www.pdnonline.com/news/index.html#4 for what he did made me think of the recent truth in blogging debate that seemed to borrow a lot of ideas about veracity from journalism.
This discussion is now closed. My thanks to everyone who contributed.
